A lifetime

by Vanessa Gugenheimer

Have you ever seen me carve my nails into my flesh,
for all the unspoken thoughts I never gave away
All the scars I burned into my skin
that tell the stories I never dared to say?
Because what if you would’ve changed your mind and saw me for who I am?
I see us in the garden, sitting side by side.
Reminiscing about all the late night drives.
Thinking would it have worked out all the same,
if the engine stopped one day.
Me asking if you ever found my clues?
The little pieces I always left behind for you?
Could you ever recognise my writing?
Even though you never understood the poets language
I’m here to explain every metaphor and rhyme I write.
Telling you “My darling, always remember that I never needed you but chose to love you a lifetime”

About the author: A student of English and Literature and a writer drawn to melancholy and the quiet longing of rainy autumn days. She loves stories that move readers to tears and enjoys everything nerdy. Through her poetry, Vanessa explores the balance between heartache, beauty, and wonder
